Seurat's Study for Bathers at Asnières gathers a few young men resting on the grassy bank of the Seine at the edge of Paris, the water bright before them and factory chimneys hazy across the far shore. Even as a study the mood is unmistakable: a warm, idle afternoon, time going slack in the heat. Seurat gives ordinary working people the stillness of a frieze. Above a desk or in a hallway, it holds that becalmed, sunlit hush.
