Toulouse-Lautrec's Equestrienne (At the Cirque Fernando) circles the ring of the Paris circus — a bareback rider carried round on her horse, the ringmaster looming at the centre, the scene tilted and cropped like a fleeting glimpse from the stands. Lautrec loved the circus and painted its glamour and strain together, all movement and sharp observation. It hums with performance.
