Constable's Death of Ananias renders the old biblical drama — figures recoiling as Ananias falls before the apostles, gesture and shadow doing all the telling. Woven into a double-sided cushion the crowded composition softens into texture and tone. Set it at the corner of the sofa or against a reading chair, a piece with real gravity to live alongside in a quiet room.
