Turner's Valley of Aosta — Snowstorm, Avalanche, and Thunderstorm throws the full weather of the Alps across the scene: snow and cloud and falling mountainside caught in one great sweeping vortex of light. It is the sublime as Turner understood it — nature vast and moving, and us small before it. For all its power there's a strange calm in watching it. Above a desk or a reading chair, it lends a wall real weather and real distance.
