Turner's View of Lucerne dissolves the Swiss lakeside into light and water — mountains rising pale beyond the lake, their forms half-made of mist, the whole scene shimmering toward the atmospheric haze he loved above all. Little is fixed; everything glows and drifts. Hung above a sofa or a bed, it opens the wall onto air and distance, a slow expanse of water and mountain that quiets a room simply by giving the eye somewhere far to go.
