Puvis de Chavannes sets In the Heather out on open moorland — a figure amid the low, flowering scrub, land and sky pared back to the calm, frieze-like simplicity he loved. The palette is muted, the mood contemplative, as though the whole scene were paused mid-thought. It carries the wide quiet of open country. Hung in a hallway or above a desk, it brings a spare, grounded stillness — a bit of heath and sky to rest the eye on in passing.
