Painted in the style of John Constable, Hampstead, Stormy Sky gives itself over to weather — a great bank of cloud gathering over the heath, the light heavy and changeable in the way Constable studied so devotedly from these same hills. The land sits low; the sky does all the talking. Above a mantel or along a stairway, it brings the restless calm of an English afternoon before rain, when the whole day seems to hold its breath.
