Van Gogh's The Bedroom shows his own small room in Arles — a plain wooden bed, two rush-seated chairs, pictures pinned to the wall, the floor tilting gently up towards you. He wanted it to speak of rest above all, and chose broad, calm colours to do it: soft blues, buttery yellows, a red coverlet. There is something deeply reassuring in its simplicity. On a bedroom wall it feels entirely at home, a quiet picture about the comfort of one's own four walls.
