Van Gogh's The Poet's Garden is one of a small group he painted to decorate the room he was keeping for a friend in Arles — a corner of the public garden he liked to imagine old poets had once walked. Autumn trees lean over a path where a couple strolls, everything held in warm greens and gold. It is a hopeful, welcoming picture. Above a reading chair or in a hallway, it brings the mild, unhurried feeling of a garden in early autumn.
