Guardi's A Capriccio with a Ruined Gothic Arch is an invented view — a pointed arch left half to ruin, ivy loosening the stonework, a few small figures passing beneath as though the grandeur were nothing unusual. He painted it with that quick, flickering Venetian touch, more mood than record. There's a gentle melancholy in it, the sense of time softening everything it touches.
