Hokusai's Tama River in Musashi Province — a horse led along the shallows, reeds bending at the water's edge, and Mount Fuji standing pale and far-off across the plain. It comes from his Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and like the best of them it finds the mountain almost by accident, past the ordinary business of the day. In cool blues and quiet greys, it brings a little distance and open air to a wall you pass often.
