Hokusai's Ushibori in Hitachi Province draws up alongside a great thatched boat moored in the reeds, a traveller aboard, the water so still it seems barely to move. A startled bird lifts; Mount Fuji rests low on the horizon. It's one of the quietest of his Thirty-six Views — dawn on the water, before the day has begun. In soft blues and greys, it brings a held-breath calm to a bedroom or a reading corner.
