In Avenue of Pollard Birches and Poplars, Van Gogh runs a double line of trees straight into the distance — bare, pollarded trunks marching toward a low horizon, the perspective pulling the eye deep into the scene. It is an early work built on rhythm and receding line, plain country turned quietly compelling. There is a bracing, autumn-walk feeling to it.
